What is Juandice

Jaundice is when your baby's skin turns yellow. This is a common, temporary. and usually harmless condition in newborn infants. It affects both full-term and premature babies, usually appearing during the first week of the baby's life.

What is Phototherapy

Phototherapy, or light treatment, uses UV light to break down bilirubin in the blood. Your baby's skin and blood absorb these light waves, transforming bilirubin into products that can be easily excreted.

What is the Biliblanket?

This system uses fiber optics and provides the highest level of therapeutic light available to treat your baby. A pad of woven fibers is used to transport light from a light source to your baby. This covered fiberoptic pad is placed directly against your baby to bathe the skin in light. Absorption of this light leads to the elimination of bilirubin. The time of light exposure is more than with conventional phototherapy where the baby is removed from under the lights for feeding times. With a Biliblanket your baby can wear a nappy, be held skin to skin, and breastfeed during treatment, thus ensuring 24hr continuous light exposure.

Causes of Jaundice

Physiological Jaundice: Common in over 50% of newborns due to an immature liver, causing slower bilirubin processing. It appears at 2 to 3 days after birth, fades by 1 to 2 weeks without harm.
Breast-Feeding Jaundice: It affects 5% to 10% of babies due to insufficient breast milk intake and dehydration. Similar to physiological jaundice but more pronounced, signaling need for breastfeeding assistance.
Breast-Milk Jaundice: Seen in 1% to 2% of breast-fed babies due to certain milk compounds. Prompts excess bilirubin absorption, lasting 3 to 10 weeks without harm.
Blood Group Incompatibility (Rh or ABO issues): Mismatched baby-mother blood types can lead to antibody-induced red cell destruction, causing sudden bilirubin rise. Often starts within 24 hours. Preventable with RhoGAM injection within 72 hours post-delivery for Rh problems, averting future risks.

My baby was born prematurely and was taken to ICU. This was hard, as I dreamt of immediate skin on skin and breastfeeding after the birth which we could not do. In ICU he developed jaundice and had to get phototherapy. When we were discharged it was strongly advised we continue with phototherapy. This is when I contacted Estherea. Therefore I could cuddle my baby as long as I wanted while the lights was on my baby's back. I could also breast feed while the light was on him.

Sister Vanessa played an integral role in my early motherhood and breastfeeding journey. She offered unwavering support when my baby and I struggled with breastfeeding and my little boy had neonatal jaundice. She identified my baby's lip tie and was persistent in her encouragement and home visits until my baby and I succeeded as a breastfeeding dyad. She never gave up on us.
